Slow mail & address book after Snow Leopard upgrade

After upgrading our Macbook to Snow Leopard we were surprised to see Mail, Contacts, and Skype being painfully slow to open. After searching through Google however, a quick fix was indeed available.
The problem was all based in the Contacts application. There was a Smart Group in Address Book for all contacts that were not already assigned to a group. Simply deleting this Smart Group solved all of the start up problems. Apparently any application trying to get information from Address Book would get caught up in the molasses.
