Skype for iPhone is here

At long last the free Skype application is available for the iPhone. Now you can easily see who is online, chat with them and even make VOIP calls... if you are on WiFi connection.

Overall it works as expected, after the small download from the AppStore you can quickly enter your account information and get access to your account and contacts. For long contact lists you can select a simple filter for all online users.

However it quickly became apparent that this first version is of limited use since I had to have the application running to be aware of anything. I can easily send messages out but someone trying to reach me needs to hope that I have the application running and the iPhone turned on. Still better than nothing and an issue that will hopefully be resolved with the 3.0 firmware due out this summer.

Some other things missing however include:
  • the ability to store multiple accounts and switch between them
  • a smaller user list (or optional compressed version)
  • allow voip calls also over 3g
  • possibility to leave voice mail to contacts
