Security Update 2010-001 causes iLife to crash

After dutifully applying the MacOSX Security Update 2010-001 in January, I noticed that most of my applications (including my iLife applications like iPhoto, iTunes, and others) would always crash at startup with kernel errors. This was on my MacBook of nearly 3 years.
Fortunately I still had support and after calling a couple of times to try some basic things, the technician finally said that there had been some reports on older MacBooks that have been upgraded from Tiger all the way up to Snow Leopard. The fix was to simply put in the Snow Leopard CDROM and reinstalling the MacOSX operating system.
The installation keeps all of your original files and simply overwrites system files. Sure enough, that did it and after reapplying my System updates, my MacBook is working great. Everything worked again!
